What is the “Best Camera” to Get?

"What is the best camera to get?"  Having been in the photography business all of my adult life, I get this question quite a bit.

I have had expensive 35mm cameras, medium format cameras, "one time use" cameras, the first digital cameras, point and shoot digital cameras, and cell phone cameras.

Which one was the best–simple–my opinion is that the best camera is the one you have with you.

I use to use my big SLR camera for just about everything–which wasn’t much as the camera was so big I never took it anywhere!  Then I started to carry my point and shoot digital camera for almost everything.  The quality for SOME shots may not have been as good as my Nikon DSLR, but it was "good enough"–and I didn’t mind carrying that small camera in my pocket.  For video, I used a Flip video camera–pretty cool, and pocket size, but you had to remember to take it with you.

When Apple came out with their latest iPhone last year–the one that captured video–I switched to AT&T so that I would always have my photo and video camera with me.  I find myself taking a lot more photos of my kids–and of course a lot more video.  I take photos of things I would not have in the past.  For example, last week I had to purchase some paint for a room I am painting.  I took out my iPhone, and took a quick photo of the paint can lid–so that if I ever need to match the paint, I have the exact color documented–and handy to get to (I stored the photo on my computer in a folder called "Home").

Apple recently introduced the next version of their iPhone.  The camera has been updated to take low light photos (and includes a pseudo led flash), and has an upgraded video camera. Click here for a great review on the new iPhone.

Most cell phones now have cameras on them that take decent photos, and decent video.  I switched to the iPhone for a number of other reasons (one of which is the HoldMyMemories.com app that is coming out shortly).  Whichever phone you have, I encourage you to use the photo and video capabilities–especially if you have children at home–catch those fleeting memories!

My New Toy

I waited a long time before making the jump.  I heard everyone talking about it.  I saw everyone walking around with one–but I waited…

Still, I knew I would eventually get one, but I was waiting for that one feature, the one that was important to me, the one that was my "killer app"……video recording.  I have kids, I love capturing video as well as photos of them.  I told myself when "it" recorded video, I would get one.

Earlier this year Apple announced that the new iPhone would capture video.  This is what I was waiting for.  To me, those precious memories that occur every day in our lives go "uncaptured" far too often.  I LOVE that I now ALWAYS have my video camera with me.  I can catch my kids being precious kids in ways I would have missed before.  I didn’t always have my "point and shoot" camera with me to put in video mode, I didn’t always have my Flip Video Camera with me, but I do always have my cell phone with me–and now I always have my video camera.

Check out the blog entry below "This One is for Mom" (Sept 19th).  Had I not had my video camera iPhone with me, I would have missed this very special moment.  The end melted Mom’s heart.

This video below too–I came home from work and Jacob was outside showing off his pride and joy–he just lost his first tooth!  If I didn’t have my cell phone with me, I would have missed this moment:

Other cell phones capture video, I have had several of them, but the functionality of the iPhone makes it so much easier to use–and "easy" means you will use it more often.

Photo quality outside is pretty good.  It is kind of weak for indoor photos (there are many photo "apps" out there that will help adjust/correct your photos).  The phone really needs a flash.  I imagine that Apple could have put one on the iPhone, as several other manufacturers have, but then I wouldn’t have a reason to upgrade when the new phones come out NEXT year!

Then there are the many apps that are out there–I have my favorites, but that is an entry for another day!

Away From the Kids, Distant Family, and Skype

I recently had to make a trip out of the country.  It amazes me how much times have changed.  When I was a kid my father was in the army and many years we lived overseas.  To communicate with family members in the states we sent cassette tapes to stay in touch–basically it was an hour long monologue as my Mom tried to fill the tape!  (I came across one of those tapes several years ago–my brother and I writing and singing songs when he was seven and I was ten, but that is a different blog entry!)

Today times have changed.  Before I left on my last foreign trip I purchased a $10 webcam on eBay, plugged it into the USB port on our home computer, set up Skype on that computer, and configured it to answer with video when I called in from my laptop.  When I arrived at my destination, I started doing some work on my computer–next thing I knew my computer was "ringing"…it was my kids placing a video call!

I am pretty technical, but some if this stuff still amazes me.  Here I was halfway across the world having a video chat with my kids!  It was as if they were there.  That sure alleviated some of my homesickness.  The connection I had on my laptop was not very fast, but I was still able to see and hear my family clearly.

I also use Skype as my Instant Messenger program.  You can also use it to place "regular" phone calls–although I don’t use it for that.

This evening our computer was "ringing".  It was my niece calling for my daughter.  She had moved several hundred miles away.  Although she often calls, it was fun for our kids to be able to see and connect with her.  Below is a snip from that call–you can see how clear the video and audio is.

If you are a parent that travels, odds are you take your laptop with you–and you have a computer at home.  Try setting up Skype and using it to connect with your kids.  It is easy to set up, free to use, and the next best thing to being there!

Great Value in a Laptop!

I am a big laptop fan.  Ever since I purchased my first $2,000 Compaq 286 with the black and white 10 inch screen and 20 megabytes of hard drive space I have been hooked on the conveniance of a laptop.

I came across this value today at one of my favorite gadget sites, Engadget.com.  A Toshiba 17 inch laptop, pretty well equipped, at Wal-Mart for $348!  17 inches is a big screen–can certainly be a desktop replacement.  I like the numeric keyboard on the side too.  I thought I would pass this along to those of you with kids going off to school, or if you are looking for a good little machine to take with you on trips (and store some of those digital memories!)

Catch Some Video!

Having been in the portrait business for over twenty years, some people don’t understand why I am always asking “do you take video of your kids?”.

When I was a kids my parents took 8mm home movies. It was very expensive, and very inconvenient (maybe that’s why there is a total of about three minutes of me as a kid!). As I got older, those big Beta and VHS recorders came out—expensive cameras, but videotape was relatively cheap, and you could tape over it. Then the digital video cameras came out—still kind of pricey, but they were a little smaller, and the tapes were still cheap. The only problem was that although smaller, the cameras were still rather bulky.

Of course even with cheap videotape there is still the issue of “all those boxes of videotapes” piled in a closet somewhere.

Several years ago, right after digital cameras hit the marketplace, the “point and shoot” camera manufacturers developed still cameras that capture great quality video. This meant that if you had your camera with you, you also had a video camera. Most people I know didn’t really use the video mode of their camera—many didn’t know it was there—and a lot of people didn’t know what to do with the video once they took it.

Today we have even more choices. I purchased a Flip Video camera several months ago—VERY convenient as it is so small you can put it in your jeans pocket, and so easy to use. One of my favorite all time videos was taken with the flip (see below). It is so convenient that you can easily take it with you anywhere—and always grab a minute or so of video.

Most new cell phones take not only decent photos, but decent video, which means you almost always have a video camera with you. Most people I know haven’t used their phone for video. Have you?

When you are hanging out with your kids, and see them doing something that makes you smile, take out your cell phone (or point and shoot camera), put it in video mode, and capture the moment!

My suggestion is to not take sixty minutes of video, but sixty seconds (or less). Catch that moment you want to capture, transfer it to your computer (I have emailed my video clips to myself), and back it up.

After you get your video on your computer, upload it for viewing and storage on any number of sites. Personally I like HoldMyMemories.com—memories (videos, still, audio, and written) are our business. Whether you use us, or any other service, capture the memory! One month from now, one year from now, one decade from now you will be glad you did.

These memories are fleeting—hold them!
